Why I Joined A Sorority

My freshman year of college (2017-2018) I lived in the dorms at St. Cloud State University, and I made a lot of friends who lived in my dorm! It was really convenient to walk up a few levels to be at my friends rooms and hang out with them. However, I didn’t really know anyone outside of my dorm. Sure, I talked to a few people here and there in my classes, but nothing deep enough to call those people my friends.

My roommate Anna, my friend from home Julia, my next door neighbor (who became Julia’s roommate later that year) Alexis and I all became super close friends. We did everything together, and it was really fun! We decided we should all get an apartment together for our second year of college, and in our second semester of our freshman year, we signed our lease!

Over the summer, we hung out a few times when we could make time from work; we all lived at home at the point, besides Alexis who lived in the apartment. Otherwise all summer I was pretty much hanging out with high school friends, working at Potbelly, and watching Hulu or Netflix. One of my favorite shows to watch was Scream Queens and oddly enough, it made me want to join a Sorority.

When I started my second year here at State, I talked to Anna, Alexis, and Julia about joining a sorority. Anna and Alexis seemed interested so we all signed up for fall recruitment together!

There are four sororities here at SCSU: Delta Zeta, Delta Phi Epsilon, Theta Phi Alpha, and Kappa Phi Omega. Alexis and I joined Theta Phi Alpha, and Anna joined Kappa Phi Omega.

So, why did I want to join a Sorority? I wanted to have friendships that lasted a lifetime, I wanted to be more involved on campus, meet new people, and create new opportunities for myself.

This past year, the women of Theta Phi Alpha had to work together on our positions. I was nominated for Academics chair, and I currently am doing Academics, Recruitment, Social Media, and Social Chair. While that seems like a lot, it really isn’t. I had all summer to plan how I want recruitment to go, plan mixers, and create my social media plan (that I’m still working on, if you want to know what apps I use I can create a post for that!). For academics, I just make sure all the girls on staying on track with their grades and meet with them throughout the semester, so it isn’t as high stress as recruitment.

I also met so many wonderful people! I met my boyfriend because of Greek Life, I am friends with women in all the other sororities, friends with some of the men of the fraternities (Delta Sigma Phi, Phi Kappa Tau, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Acacia, and Phi Beta Sigma) and, I was even nominated as Women of the Year for Delta Sigma Phi! I became a lot more outgoing than I used to be, the positions I hold, and the people I have met have definitely helped me a lot.

Being in a sorority has pushed me to do my best in everything I do, it has shown me that I can take on multiple things at once, and it has made me into a more confident person. Joining a sorority has helped me improve myself, and I’m excited to see myself grow into the person I know I am. I highly suggest joining a sorority. Even if you think you aren’t the ‘typical sorority girl’. I didn’t think joining a sorority would be right for me, but after I joined I realized it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I love my sisters and I love my chapter.
